Guacamelee! 2

Guacamelee! 2 is the sequel to the smash-hit action platformer Guacamelee! In an eye-poppingly colourful Metroidvania-style adventure former hero Juan Aguacate is brought out of retirement to stop a powerful and ruthless luchador who has emerged as the ruler of a parallel timeline. Set in a unique world full of challenges, adventure and humor, Guacamelee! 2 expands upon the original game by introducing new levels, enemies, characters, and gameplay mechanics for the ultimate high-flying luchador experience. Developed and self-published by Drinkbox Studios, Plan of Attack has worked with the highly-acclaimed developer on each entry of its hugely popular series to date, alongside its hit PSP spinoff Severed. When it came to the campaign, Plan of Attack needed to match the ambition of Drinkbox’s sequel, crafting a stylish European communications strategy where the results would rival the breadth of Guacamelee! 2’s expanded Mexiverse.

The campaign began on July 27th with the PC and PlayStation 4 release date announcement of Guacamelee! 2. Collaborating closely with Drinkbox, Plan of Attack distributed a press release to its extensive database of European and North American media and influencer contacts, detailing its 21st August release date. The press release generated 283 news stories from the likes of Rock Paper Shotgun, Kotaku UK, Eurogamer, IGN Spain, 3D Juegos, Vandal, IGN Italy, Every Eye, Jeux Video and Game Kult.

With the release date announcement wrapped up, Plan of Attack began building out a targeted review and streamer list from its extensive international database. On August 2nd, a review and streamer invite was distributed to press and influencers, asking those who wished to play the game prior to its launch to register their interest. The response was predictably enthusiastic, with hundreds of requests flooding in. Plan of Attack carefully checked and subsequently logged each request, curating a list of international leading video game media.

Liaising with Plan of Attack, Drinkbox Studios organised a PlayStation Blog article including the launch trailer for August 20th, the day before the game’s release. Respecting Drinkbox and Sony’s close relationship, Plan of Attack distributed a press release announcing the launch to its European media contacts. This generated a further 77 news stories from the likes of PC Gamer, Kotaku UK, Computer Bild, Vida Extra, Multiplayer and Videogamer Portugal.

Then, a day later on August 21st, the review embargo lifted. Having distributed the review codes in the weeks prior, Plan of Attack scored 87 day-one European reviews for Guacamelee! 2, ensuring it was on every major video game website across the continent. The game reviewed highly with outlets including Eurogamer, Metro, Trusted Reviews, Videogamer, Game Blog, Game Kult and Multiplayer. Since then the game has picked up 245 reviews in total including further coverage from Jeux Video, 4 Players, PC Games, Computer Bild and Gamesradar. For the game’s launch, Plan of Attack also organised an interview accompanying an 8 out of 10 review from the leading voice of video game criticism, EDGE magazine.
